X-ray Studies of Two Neutron Stars in 47 Tucanae: toward Constraints on the Equation of State

چکیده
We report spectral and variability analysis of two quiescent low mass X-ray binaries (X5 and X7, previously detected with the ROSAT HRI) in a Chandra ACIS-I observation of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. X5 demonstrates sharp eclipses with an 8.666±0.01 hr period, as well as dips showing an increased NH column. The thermal spectra of X5 and X7 are well-modeled by unmagnetized hydrogen atmospheres of hot neutron stars. No hard power law component is required. A possible edge or absorption feature is identified near 0.64 keV, perhaps an OV edge from a hot wind. Spectral fits imply that X7 is significantly more massive than the canonical 1.4 M⊙ neutron star mass, with M> 1.8M⊙ for a radius range of 9-14 km, while X5’s spectrum is consistent with a neutron star of mass 1.4M⊙ for the same radius range. Alternatively, if much of the X-ray luminosity is due to continuing accretion onto the neutron star surface, the feature may be the 0.87 keV rest-frame absorption complex (O VIII & other metal lines) intrinsic to the neutron star atmosphere, and a mass of 1.4 M⊙ for X7 may be allowed. Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملSpin and Isospin Asymmetry, Equation of State and Neutron Stars
In the present work, we have obtained the equation of state for neutron star matter considering the in uence of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin state. We have also investigated the structure of neutron stars. According to our results, the spin asymmetry stiens the equation of state and leads to high mass for the neutron star.
متن کاملVariability of 19 Millisecond Pulsars in 47 Tucanae with Chandra Hrc-s
We present results from our 830 ks observation of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae with the Chandra X-ray Observatory’sHigh Resolution Camera-S. We limit our analysis here to the 19 previously known, localized millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the cluster. This work more than doubles the sample of X-rayYdetected MSPs observed with sensitivity to rotational variability; it is also the first survey of...
متن کاملAn X-ray Variable Millisecond Pulsar in the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae: Closing the Link to Low Mass X-ray Binaries
We report the discovery of peculiar X-ray spectral variability in the binary radio millisecond pulsar PSR J0024–7204W in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The observed emission consists of a dominant non-thermal component, which is eclipsed for a portion of the orbit, and a thermal component, which appears to be persistent. We propose that the non-thermal X-rays originate in a relativistic intra...
متن کاملDifferent Magnetic Field Distributions in Deformed Neutron Stars
In this work, we review the formalism which would allow us to model magnetically deformed neutron stars. We study the effect of different magnetic field configurations on the equation of state (EoS) and the structure of such stars. For this aim, the EoS of magnetars is acquired by using the lowest order constraint variational (LOCV) method and employing the AV18 potential....
